Bioscientists to Receive DOE Funding for Biomanufacturing and Microbiome Research

September 30, 2022

Artistic rendering of biomanufacturing

Biosciences researchers are among the recipients of four new DOE awards. Two awards will focus on reducing carbon emissions while producing bioenergy. The other two are aimed at understanding the role of microbiomes in the biogeochemical cycling of elements like carbon.

Small-scale Changes in Environment Can Have Large Effects on Microbial Communities

Circular visualization of genomes of Arthrobacter isolates highlighting similar and dissimilar regions.

A Berkeley Lab team analyzed the genotypes and phenotypes of several Arthrobacter strains to correlate cellular functions to their location at varying depths within a single sediment core and in nearby groundwater. They found that Arthrobacter, as a genus, has remarkable flexibility in altering its suites of carbon degradation genes. This genomic variation was found to be linked to the individual strain’s environment and is the basis for Arthrobacter’s ability to break down a wide variety of complex carbon sources.

Congratulations to Biosciences Area Director’s Award Recipients

October 3, 2019

Several Biosciences Area personnel are among the 2019 Berkeley Lab Director’s Awards honorees. This annual program recognizes outstanding contributions by employees to all facets of Lab activities. A complete list of winners can be found here. The Director’s Achievement Awards ceremony will take place on November 15 at 4 PM in the Building 50 Auditorium. All staff are invited and the event will be streamed live.

Berkeley Lab and Colorado School of Mines scientists are collaborating on the development of a microbe-based system that could remove toxic compounds from wastewater produced by the oil and gas industries so it can be reused in other water-intensive sectors such as agriculture and energy production. Leading the Berkeley Lab half of the partnership are … Read more »
