Announcements
Maxon Announces New Program Development Group
Mary Maxon, Associate Laboratory Director for Biosciences, announces that a Strategic Programs Development Group (SPDG) has been established in the Biosciences Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). The group will be led by Katy Christiansen, who has been with the Area for six years in a strategic planning and program development capacity.
EGSB Leadership Change
Mary Maxon has announced N. Louise Glass’s intention to step down as Director of the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Division as of May 23, 2020. Susannah Tringe, senior scientist and Joint Genome Institute (JGI) Deputy of User Programs, has agreed to serve as Interim EGSB Division Director while a world-wide search for Glass’s replacement is conducted.
Biosciences Area 2020 LDRD Projects
The projects of 14 Biosciences Area scientists and engineers received funding through the FY20 Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program. The funded projects span a diverse array of topics and approaches including: developing closed-loop plastics from biogenic feedstocks; reimagining a root system optimized for plant-microbe interactions; and creating computational tools for extracting macromolecular conformational dynamics. Lab-wide, 96 projects were selected from a field of 168 proposals. Biosciences Area efforts account for 18.5 percent of the $23 million allocated.
Summer Mentorship Opportunities Available: Biotech Partners
The Biosciences Area partners with Biotech Partners (BP), a non-profit with the mission of educating underserved youth in the Bay Area through personal, academic, and professional development experiences that increase participation in higher education and improve access to fulfilling science careers. In 2019 the Biosciences Area provided internships to seven Biotech Partners high school students.
We are looking for mentors who have a strong commitment to teaching a high school student. The mentor has to be physically present throughout their internship (June 15 – August 8, 2020), provide training, monitor their work, sign-off on timesheets, etc. If you are interested in mentoring but will be away part of the internship period, you may consider co-mentoring with a colleague. Mentors must express their interest by March 13, 2020.
