In a Metabolic Engineering Communications paper entitled “Enhanced fatty acid production in engineered chemolithoautotrophic bacteria using reduced sulfur compounds as energy sources” researchers at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) have demonstrated a promising biological approach to convert nuisance chemicals in municipal wastewater (sewage) treatment plants into renewable fuels or chemicals. Berkeley Lab Marks LGBT Pride Month
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month is celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan. The Stonewall riots were a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. As part of Pride Month, Berkeley Lab profiled scientists in the Biosciences and Computing Sciences Areas. One of the three to share their stories is Andrew Hagen, a postdoc in Cheryl Kerfeld’s group in the Molecular Biophysics & Integrated Bioimaging Division who was also a former graduate student with Jay Keasling at the Joint BioEnergy Institute. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk Visits JBEI
The Joint Bioenergy Institute (JBEI) welcomed the Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on June 4. Premier Palaszczuk visited the Bay Area with a contingent of almost 100 Queensland business, industry and community leaders who attended the BIO 2016 conference in San Francisco.
During the visit to JBEI, Premier Palaszczuk was given an overview by JBEI’s CEO Jay Keasling on the institute’s mission and achievements which was followed by presentations on the collaborative projects between the University of Queensland, JBEI and the DOE Joint Genome Institute. Blake Simmons, JBEI’s Chief Science and Technology Officer and Axel Visel, Interim Director of the DOE Joint Genome Institute gave presentations on the current collaborations with the University of Queensland.
Glass Named Division Director for Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology
Jay Keasling, Associate Laboratory Director for Biosciences, announced that N. Louise Glass, PhD, has accepted the position of Division Director for the Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology (EGSB) Division. She will continue as a professor at UC Berkeley while she leads the Division, beginning this July.
Biosciences Scientists Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Four Berkeley Lab scientists have been elected to the 2016 class of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a 236-year-old honorary society that recognizes accomplished scholars, scientists and artists in academia, the humanities, arts, business and government. They include Biosciences’ biophysicist senior scientist Robert Glaeser and biophysicist senior faculty Eva Nogales of the Molecular Biophysics & Integrated Bioimaging Division; and Jay Keasling, Biosciences associate laboratory director and CEO of the Joint BioEnergy Institute. Together with the Lab’s Nuclear Science Division Director Barbara Jacak, they are among 213 new members announced by the academy today (April 20).
Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is one of the country’s oldest learned societies and independent policy research centers, convening leaders from the academic, business, and government sectors to respond to the challenges facing—and opportunities available to—the nation and the world. Members contribute to academy publications and studies of science, engineering, and technology policy; global security and international affairs; the humanities, arts, and education; and American institutions and the public good.
