Amy Herr, faculty engineer in the Biological and Systems Engineering Division, has been appointed as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the newly established Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network.
As CTO, Herr will help lead the Network’s efforts to advance technologies to observe, measure, and analyze human biology in action.
Herr, a professor of bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley, is an award-winning innovator in bioinstrumentation focused on design and creation of tools to surmount “measurement gaps” in basic and translational biomedical science, most recently centering on difficult-to-measure protein forms in single cells. Though proteins carry out nearly every cellular task, little is known about their ever-changing and myriad expressions, called proteoforms. Herr’s laboratory harnesses microfluidic design principles to yield precision tools optimized to characterize proteoforms, offering a greater specificity that complements existing single-cell analysis tools. Her approach gives insight into basic life processes and disease progression, including resistance to cancer treatment.
