Through the JGI’s Emerging Technologies Opportunity Program (ETOP), researchers have developed and improved upon a dereplication, aggregation and scoring tool (DAS Tool) that combines existing DNA sequence binning algorithms, allowing them to reconstruct more near-complete genomes from soil metagenomes compared to other methods.
Impact of Environmental Changes on Microbes in Arctic Soils
As the Arctic continues to warm at about twice the rate of the rest of the world, scientists expect its frozen soils—known as permafrost—to thaw, activating microbes capable of decomposing soil and releasing carbons and other nutrients to the atmosphere and water. Berkeley Lab scientists in the Earth and Environmental Systems Area (EESA), led by microbial ecologist Neslihan Taş, set out to learn more about how Arctic soil microbes can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions under a warming climate. Taş’s research team collaborated with Susannah Tringe, Deputy for User Programs at the Joint Genome Institute (JGI), to conduct their study, funded by the Department of Energy’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER). The results were published in Nature Communications.
Area Scientists to Present Talks at 2018 AAAS Annual Meeting
Several Berkeley Lab scientists will present talks at the 72nd annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest general scientific society, to be held February 15 through 19 in Austin, Texas. Among them are four representing the Biosciences Area: Mary Maxon, Blake Simmons, Trent Northen, and Susannah Tringe.
State Assembly Member Tim Grayson Visits Joint Genome Institute
Grayson (D-Concord) and his district director Naser Javaid recently visited JGI to learn about their sequencing, metabolomics, single-cell genomics, and DNA synthesis capabilities. Grayson also met with JGI Director Nigel Mouncey and heard from researchers Susannah Tringe and Trent Northen.
Biosciences Staff Honored with Director’s Awards
Several Biosciences Area personnel have been named as recipients of 2016 Berkeley Lab Director’s Awards. Yan Liang (Biological Systems & Engineering), Eva Nogales, and William Jagust (Molecular Biophysics & Integrated Bioimaging, MBIB) were honored with individual awards in Early Career, Scientific Achievement, and Societal Impact, respectively. Jill Fuss and Steven Yannone (MBIB) were the recipients of a team award in Technology Transfer for the launch of their company CinderBio. Jim Bristow (Biosciences Area Office, Trent Northen (Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology & Joint Genome Institute, JGI), and Susannah Tringe (JGI), along with Eoin Brodie and Peter Nico of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area, were named in a team award in Service.
