Jenny Mortimer, Deputy Vice President of the Feedstocks Division at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) and Scientist with the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB) Division, participated at the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) 2017 Annual Meeting of the New Champions alongside business and political leaders. The annual meeting whose overall theme this year was inclusive growth in the fourth industrial revolution took place from June 27-29 in Dalian, China. At the meeting Mortimer participated at a press conference entitled “Young, talented and fighting for science” which can be viewed here.
Council on Competitiveness Releases Report on Advancing U.S. Bioscience
Biosciences’ ALD Mary Maxon and Chief Science and Technology Officer Jay Keasling recently attended an event in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Council on Competitiveness. The briefing on Capitol Hill marked the release of the council’s report, Leverage: Advancing U.S. Bioscience, which captures the outputs of a day-long discussion last year about infrastructure, technology, investment, and talent needed for advancements in U.S. bioscience.
JBEI/BSE Paper Among PLOS ONE Top 10% Most Cited Articles
A paper by Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) and Biological Systems and Engineering (BSE) researchers has been ranked among the top 10% most cited PLOS ONE articles. “A Thermophilic Ionic liquid-tolerant Cellulase Cocktail for the Production of Cellulosic Biofuels” published in 2012 has already been viewed 8,871 times and cited 50 times as of today. The paper reports the development of an Ionic Liquid-tolerant cellulase cocktail by combining thermophilic bacterial glycoside hydrolases produced by a mixed consortia with recombinant glycoside hydrolases.
DOE Renews Funding for Joint BioEnergy Institute at Berkeley Lab
The Department of Energy’s Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), led by Berkeley Lab, is one of four DOE Bioenergy Research Centers to receive funding in support of innovative research on biofuels and bioproducts. The four centers will receive a total of $40 million. The award marks the next research phase at JBEI, originally established in 2007. Read more in the Berkeley Lab News Center.
A Whole-Genome Sequenced Rice Mutant Resource for the Study of Biofuel Feedstocks
Researchers at the DOE Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), part of the Biological Systems and Engineering (BSE) Division, in collaboration with the Joint Genome Institute (JGI) are reporting the first whole-genome sequenced of a mutant population of Kitaake, a model variety of rice. Their high-density, high-resolution catalog of mutations facilitates the discovery of novel genes and functional elements that control diverse biological pathways.
