A method for discovering gene function in microbes developed by Adam Arkin, Adam Deutschbauer, Vivek Mutalik, and Pavel Novichkov of the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology division has been shortlisted for R&D Magazine’s 2017 R&D 100 Award. The technology, called Dual Barcoded Shotgun Expression Library Sequencing (Dub-seq), combines the shotgun expression library method and next generation sequencing method developed through the ENIGMA program. Now in its 55th year, the prestigious R&D 100 Awards program recognizes the most innovative inventions of the prior year. The winners will be announced and honored at a black-tie ceremony to be held this fall in conjunction with the annual R&D 100 Conference.
Two Advanced Energy Proposals Go Forward
The Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI) has announced that they will be supporting two proposals submitted by Jay Keasling, Chief Science and Technology Officer for Biosciences, and Steven Singer, Staff Scientist in the Biological Systems and Engineering Division. In partnership with EBI, Shell will fund the 6-month pilot projects, “Hosts and pathways for conversion of H2/CO2 to fuels and chemicals” (Keasling) and “Synthetic biology, bioreactor and recovery process design for biological methane conversion” (Singer). The proposals focus on the Dense Energy Carriers and Methane to Products thematic areas, respectively.
Glass Named Fellow of the Mycological Society of America
N. Louise Glass, director of the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Division, is being named a fellow of the Mycological Society of America (MSA) at their annual meeting being held this week in Athens, GA. MSA Fellows recognize mid-career members and also MSA volunteers. Glass is being honored as an outstanding mycologist who has served the MSA in several capacities, including as a member of both the Society’s leadership body and the Editorial Board of Mycologia, the official journal of the MSA. Keasling to Receive 2017 Amgen Biochemical and Molecular Engineering Award
Associate Laboratory Director for Biosciences Jay Keasling has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Amgen Biochemical and Molecular Engineering award, to be presented July 19 at the 20th Conference on Biochemical and Molecular Engineering in Newport Beach, Calif. The award, given in memory of metabolic engineering pioneer James E. “Jay” Bailey, recognizes research excellence and leadership.
Faculty Scientist Mary Firestone Elected to National Academy of Sciences
Mary Firestone, a faculty scientist with a secondary affiliation in the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Division and professor of soil microbiology at UC Berkeley’s Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, has been elected to The National Academy of Sciences. Election to the National Academy honors scientists who make distinguished and continuing achievements in their fields. Firestone’s research involves the fundamental understanding of soil microbial ecology, and its applications to problems such as global change, sustainability, and biodegradation.
