Associate Laboratory Director for Biosciences Jay Keasling has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Amgen Biochemical and Molecular Engineering award, to be presented July 19 at the 20th Conference on Biochemical and Molecular Engineering in Newport Beach, Calif. The award, given in memory of metabolic engineering pioneer James E. “Jay” Bailey, recognizes research excellence and leadership.
Faculty Scientist Mary Firestone Elected to National Academy of Sciences
Mary Firestone, a faculty scientist with a secondary affiliation in the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Division and professor of soil microbiology at UC Berkeley’s Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, has been elected to The National Academy of Sciences. Election to the National Academy honors scientists who make distinguished and continuing achievements in their fields. Firestone’s research involves the fundamental understanding of soil microbial ecology, and its applications to problems such as global change, sustainability, and biodegradation. Kuriyan Recipient of 2017 Stein and Moore Award
John Kuriyan, senior faculty biologist in the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division, was named the recipient of The Protein Society 2017 Stein and Moore Award. With this award, Kuriyan is being recognized for his scientific discoveries that have led to understanding the regulation of eukaryotic cell signaling and the phenomenon of processivity in DNA repair.
Cate among Five Lab Scientists Named New AAAS Fellows
The new American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) fellows include Biosciences’ Jamie Cate from the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division. The other Berkeley Lab scientists honored are Christopher Chang (Chemical Sciences), Roger Falcone (ALS), Michael Witherell (Lab Director), and Katherine Yelick (Computing Sciences). Bissell Awarded Fourteenth Annual AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research
Mina J. Bissell, Distinguished Scientist in the Biological Systems and Engineering Division will be awarded the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research at the annual meeting on April 1. The Award was first established in 2004 to honor individuals who have made significant fundamental contributions to cancer research, either through a single scientific discovery or a collective body of work. The AACR honors Bissell for her pioneering work, which has identified the roles of the extracellular matrix and three-dimensional architecture in programs of gene expression in tissue morphogenesis and cancer. Her research contributions are widely recognized for launching the tumor microenvironment field and for revolutionizing cell and cancer biologists’ perspective on the dominant forces in cancer.
