Frances Arnold, the Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Biotechnology at the California Institute of Technology, is one of the winners of this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry. She was a founding member of Berkeley Lab’s Biosciences Expert Advisory Committee and has some connections with the Biosciences Area from her time as a graduate student and postdoctoral scholar at University of California, Berkeley.
Mary Maxon Tells Leaders Carbon Could Be California’s Next Gold Rush
Biosciences ALD Mary Maxon recently spoke at an event hosted by the East Bay Economic Development Alliance about the East Bay’s unique biotech innovation ecosystem. During the panel discussion, Maxon noted that carbon waste could be California’s next gold rush, driving the bioeconomy. The discussion was recorded by Contra Costa TV and will be rebroadcast throughout October. Go here to see the schedule. Read more about this event at the “Tim Talk” blog on PleasantonWeekly.com.
JGI Announces 2019 JGI Community Science Program Portfolio
Given the scale of sequence generation possible, the annual call for JGI Community Science Program (CSP) proposals included a cap of 2.5 Tb of sequence data per proposal, though collaborative proposals could request as much as 40 Tb, and the submissions scaled up accordingly. The 23 approved CSP 2019 proposals were selected from 84 full submissions based on 105 letters of intent. Click here to see the full list of approved CSP 2019 proposals. Additionally, just over half of the accepted proposals come from primary investigators who have never led any previously accepted JGI proposal.

Normal is Good: Breast Cells Produced in Novel Media Resemble Those In Vivo
When studying human cells in a laboratory, it is important that the media, or the broth that bathes the cells, contains all of the nutrients necessary to support cells through their normal growth and division phases even though they are outside of the body. Bioscientists at Berkeley Lab have a long history of studying breast cancer, and Martha Stampfer, senior scientist in the Biological Systems & Engineering (BSE) Division, has spent decades developing media now widely used by the community. Today, PLOS ONE published a study describing a comprehensive analysis of three kinds of media used to grow human mammary epithelial cells (HMEC).
JBEI Hosts Fossil-Based Resources, Refining, Fuels & Petrochemicals Technology Workshop
On September 20-21, JBEI hosted an internal workshop that covered the fundamentals of the production of petroleum and natural gas and their refining and conversion to chemicals. The workshop leader was Dr. Paul Bryan, former Director of DOE’s Bioenergy Technology Office (BETO), and the former VP of Biofuels Technology and Founding Manager of the Alliance for Advanced Energy Solutions for Chevron.
