The projects of 14 Biosciences Area scientists and engineers received funding through the FY20 Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program. The funded projects span a diverse array of topics and approaches including: developing closed-loop plastics from biogenic feedstocks; reimagining a root system optimized for plant-microbe interactions; and creating computational tools for extracting macromolecular conformational dynamics. Lab-wide, 96 projects were selected from a field of 168 proposals. Biosciences Area efforts account for 18.5 percent of the $23 million allocated.

Summer Mentorship Opportunities Available: Biotech Partners
The Biosciences Area partners with Biotech Partners (BP), a non-profit with the mission of educating underserved youth in the Bay Area through personal, academic, and professional development experiences that increase participation in higher education and improve access to fulfilling science careers. In 2019 the Biosciences Area provided internships to seven Biotech Partners high school students.
We are looking for mentors who have a strong commitment to teaching a high school student. The mentor has to be physically present throughout their internship (June 15 – August 8, 2020), provide training, monitor their work, sign-off on timesheets, etc. If you are interested in mentoring but will be away part of the internship period, you may consider co-mentoring with a colleague. Mentors must express their interest by March 13, 2020.
2020 Property Inventory Information
It’s time to kick off the FY20 Property Inventory! Biosciences Property Representatives will be coming through to scan assets. Here are some updates on the process and new information for this year’s inventory.
FY21 Biosciences LDRD Information
The FY2021 Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) process has now been initiated (see email from Mike Witherell dated 01/02/2020). There will be Area-wide and Early Career tracks; the Lab-wide Initiative Track has been suspended for FY2021. Please see a description of these tracks here and the FY2021 Bioscience Area priorities here. The highest ranking proposal submitted by an Early Career researcher (i.e., within 10 years of PhD) will be recommended for funding as the Area’s selection for the Early Career track. Candidates at all levels of their career are encouraged to apply for LDRD funding.
FY19 Year End Deadlines
Please take note of the processing and close deadlines as you plan for year-end activities related to proposals, subcontracts, bridge funding requests, travel expense reimbursements, and effort (LETS).
