Congratulations to Biosciences Area Director’s Award Recipients
Several Biosciences Area personnel are among the 2017 Berkeley Lab Director’s Awards honorees. This annual program recognizes outstanding contributions by employees to all facets of Lab activities. A ceremony honoring all of the 2017 recipients will be held on November 30 in the Building 50 Auditorium.
Carolyn Larabell to Receive Shirley Award at ALS User Meeting
Carolyn Larabell, a professor at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine and a faculty scientist in the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging (MBIB) Division at Berkeley Lab, has been selected by the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Users’ Executive Committee to receive the 2017 David A. Shirley Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement. Larabell directs the National Center for X-Ray Tomography (NCXT) centered around ALS Beamline 2.1, the world’s first soft x-ray microscope for biological imaging, and she led the group responsible for its commissioning, design, and construction. Soft x-ray tomography makes it possible to image intact biological cells in 3-D without structure-damaging preparation such as chemically fixing, dehydrating, and staining the specimens. On October 3, Larabell will give her award talk, entitled “The Expanding Universe of Cell Biology at the NCXT,” during the ALS User Meeting at Berkeley Lab. Read more in ALS News & Updates.
Dub-seq Named a Finalist for R&D 100 Awards
A method for discovering gene function in microbes developed by Adam Arkin, Adam Deutschbauer, Vivek Mutalik, and Pavel Novichkov of the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology division has been shortlisted for R&D Magazine’s 2017 R&D 100 Award. The technology, called Dual Barcoded Shotgun Expression Library Sequencing (Dub-seq), combines the shotgun expression library method and next generation sequencing method developed through the ENIGMA program. Now in its 55th year, the prestigious R&D 100 Awards program recognizes the most innovative inventions of the prior year. The winners will be announced and honored at a black-tie ceremony to be held this fall in conjunction with the annual R&D 100 Conference.
Two Advanced Energy Proposals Go Forward
The Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI) has announced that they will be supporting two proposals submitted by Jay Keasling, Chief Science and Technology Officer for Biosciences, and Steven Singer, Staff Scientist in the Biological Systems and Engineering Division. In partnership with EBI, Shell will fund the 6-month pilot projects, “Hosts and pathways for conversion of H2/CO2 to fuels and chemicals” (Keasling) and “Synthetic biology, bioreactor and recovery process design for biological methane conversion” (Singer). The proposals focus on the Dense Energy Carriers and Methane to Products thematic areas, respectively.
