One day, patients may be able to monitor their body’s response to cancer therapy just by having their blood drawn. A new study, led by Amy Herr, faculty engineer in the Biological Systems & Engineering Division, has taken an important step in that direction by measuring a panel of cancer proteins in rare, individual tumor cells that float in the blood. Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Awards $7.5 Million to Biosciences Researchers
Seven LBNL Biosciences Area researchers are among the 47 new investigators chosen by the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub to receive up to $1.5 million each to conduct cutting-edge biomedical research — with no strings attached. The investigator awards are the first individual grants by the CZ Biohub as it seeks to foster unconventional scientific exploration and encourage researchers to invent new tools to accelerate the pace of discovery. Senior investigators will each receive 1.5 million over five years while the younger faculty will receive half the amount, $750,000.
Biosciences Area’s senior investigators are: Jill Banfield and Michal Maharbiz (EGSB), Dan Fletcher and Amy Herr (BSE). The junior investigators are Ke Xu (MBIB) and Wenjun Zhang (EGSB). Read more at UC Berkeley News.
Berkeley Innovator Named Fellow of National Academy of Inventors
Amy Herr, faculty scientist in Biological Systems and Engineering, was among 175 inductees announced by the Academy on December 13. Election is a “distinction accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society.” Herr is renowned for innovative engineering analysis of complex biological systems, with an emphasis on analytical tools and diagnostics.
