The Introductory College Level Experience in Microbiology (iCLEM), JBEI’s microbiology program, provides hands-on experience for high potential, low-income high school students. The summer intensive program celebrated its tenth anniversary this year. Read more on the JBEI website.
Biosciences SULI Interns and Mentors Share Their Experiences
Liam Quigley, Biosciences undergraduate intern, produced a video about the experience of Berkeley Lab’s SULI (Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships) interns at the Biosciences Area. SULI is a program that encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Quigley spoke with mentors and interns to learn more about the benefits of undertaking this program at Berkeley Lab. Follow the Biosciences Storify to learn more about the Area’s educational and outreach efforts.
DOE JGI Helps Define Standards for Genomes from Uncultivated Microorganisms
More than a century after the Industrial Revolution, advances in DNA sequencing technologies have caused similarly dramatic shifts in scientific research, and one aspect is studying the planet’s biodiversity. One critical term that needs standardization is “metadata,” defined simply as “data about other data.” In Nature Biotechnology, an international team led by DOE JGI researchers has developed standards for the minimum metadata to be supplied with single amplified genomes (SAGs) and metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) submitted to public databases. Read more on the DOE JGI website.
AIChE Honors Biological Systems and Engineering Researchers
The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) has recognized two Biological Systems and Engineering (BSE) early-career researchers–Akash Narani and Ning Sun–with honors to be bestowed at the 2017 AIChE Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, Minn., this fall.
Biosciences Researchers Brief Advisory Panel for Food and Agriculture
Two Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) scientists recently joined colleagues from the Earth & Environmental Sciences Area to share their expertise with the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Science Advisory Panel. They briefed the panel on their research related to enhancing plant-microbe interactions for improved plant yields and to increasing the efficiency of genome editing tool CRISPR in plants.
