Numerous Biosciences Area personnel are among the 2021 Berkeley Lab Director’s Awards honorees. This annual program recognizes outstanding contributions by employees to all facets of Lab activities. Robert M. Glaeser, senior scientist in the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging (MBIB) Division, will receive the Berkeley Lab Prize – Lifetime Achievement Award for pioneering cryo-electron microscopy as a physicist, biologist, inventor, and mentor. Read more.
Simon Roux, research scientist at the Joint Genome Institute (JGI), will receive the Early Scientific Career award for exceptional scientific achievements and leadership in the area of viral ecogenomics and viral community science, in support of Berkeley Lab’s mission related to energy and the environment.
JGI’s Natasha Brown, Anne Mason, Ashleigh Papp, Axel Visel, Zhong Wang, and Denise Yadon will receive the Diversity award in recognition of their roles in developing, implementing, and sustaining an impactful student internship program with the University of California, Merced – a Hispanic-serving institution – and for the successful student career trajectories enabled by this enriching workforce development partnership.
MBIB’s Paul Adams, Pavel Afonine, Dorothee Liebschner, Nigel Moriarty, Billy Poon, Nicholas Sauter, Oleg Sobolev, and Petrus Zwart will receive the Tech Transfer award for creating Phenix – a world-class tool for automating macromolecular crystallography that is now being used around the globe.
In addition, Gary Andersen (Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology), Javier Ceja-Navarro (Biological Systems and Engineering), Jan-Fang Cheng (JGI), James Garbe (BSE), Taek Soon Lee (BSE), and Neslihan Taş Baas (EGSB) will receive the Safety award as part of the Institutional Biosafety Committee team cited for their exceptional safety support of Berkeley Lab’s biological research, especially for the accelerated review and approval of COVID-19 related research proposals while ensuring worker safety during this unprecedented time of need.
