In a virtual ceremony on January 24, Associate Laboratory Director for Biosciences Paul Adams and Jay Keasling, Biological Systems and Engineering senior faculty scientist, were among several Lab staff who received the Department of Energy’s (DOE) highest form of employee recognition for excellence and achievements.
Biosciences Area FY23 LDRD Projects
The projects of 22 Biosciences Area scientists and engineers received funding through the FY23 Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program.
Dalicia Thomasson, Pivoting Planner
For Thomasson, a creative outlet helps her feel connected with the natural world while also restoring her calm disposition. In her position at Berkeley Lab, Thomasson supports the BSE Division Director and each day is filled with new challenges and surprises. Keeping a level head and an optimistic attitude are key to her success. “In our role, we just have to stay calm,” Thomasson said. “Things change and you have to adapt.”
Early Career Researchers Shine at Berkeley Lab SLAM
Aparajitha Srinivasan placed third and Ying Wang was awarded People’s Choice in the Berkeley Lab Research SLAM competition on September 22. Srinivasan, a postdoctoral researcher at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) in the Biological Systems and Engineering (BSE) Division, detailed her research on utilizing computational modeling to select the best routes to creating aroma additives. The Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB) Division’s Wang covered how to determine which microbes eat which carbon molecules.
Protein Structures Aren’t Set in Stone
A new paper from Biosciences researchers in the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Division, the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division, and the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) reveals the possibility that many of the proteins we thought we knew actually exist in other, unknown shapes.
