The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has announced that 564 of its members—among them four scientists at Berkeley Lab—have been elected Fellows as part of the 2021 class. The two newly named Fellows from the Biosciences Area are: Eva Nogales, a senior faculty scientist in the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging (MBIB) Division, and Scott Baker an affiliate with the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI).
Keasling Awarded Othmer Gold Medal
Jay Keasling, a senior faculty scientist in Biological Systems and Engineering, professor at UC Berkeley, and CEO of the Joint BioEnergy Institute, is the recipient of the Science History Institute’s 2022 Othmer Gold Medal. The award recognizes his efforts in developing innovative synthetic biology tools that address major societal challenges such as biofuel manufacturing and medical applications.
Nogales Appointed to Royal Academy of Spain
Eva Nogales, a senior faculty scientist in the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging (MBIB) Division, was appointed as a foreign member attached to the Natural Sciences Section of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences of Spain. The Royal Academy, founded in 1847, is tasked with promoting study and research in the mathematical, physical, chemical, geological, and biological sciences, as well as disseminating the knowledge gained thereby. It is made up of a maximum of 72 permanent members, 144 corresponding members, and supernumerary members and foreign members. Nogales, who is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator and professor at UC Berkeley, obtained her bachelor’s degree in physics from the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid in Spain. Her research specialty involves using electron microscopy (EM) and image analysis, as well as biochemical and biophysical assays to gain mechanistic insights into crucial molecular processes in the life of eukaryotic cells.
Naomi Ginsberg Elected Fellow of the American Physical Society
Naomi Ginsberg, a faculty scientist in the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging (MBIB) Division, is among the 2021 class of Fellows elected by the American Physical Society (APS). The APS Fellowship Program recognizes members who have made exceptional contributions to the physics enterprise in research, applications, leadership, service, or education. Ginsberg, who is also a UC Berkeley associate professor of chemistry, was cited for her innovative development of spatiotemporally resolved imaging and spectroscopy methods—as well as their applications in elucidating energy transport in hierarchical and heterogeneous materials and in the formation and transformation of said materials.
Richmond Sarpong Receives ACS Edward Leete Award
Richmond Sarpong, biochemist faculty scientist in the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division has been announced as the 2021 Edward Leete awardee by the Division of Organic Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. Sarpong, who is also a UC Berkeley chemistry professor, is being specifically recognized for his outstanding contributions to research in organic chemistry and teaching.
