Jay Keasling, a senior faculty scientist in Biological Systems and Engineering, professor at UC Berkeley, and CEO of the Joint BioEnergy Institute, is the recipient of the Science History Institute’s 2022 Othmer Gold Medal. The award recognizes his efforts in developing innovative synthetic biology tools that address major societal challenges such as biofuel manufacturing and medical applications.
BSE Experiment Sent to International Space Station to Test DNA Storage Method
Scientists in the Biosciences Area are exploring the ability of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, to store and protect DNA from damage in an experiment that recently traveled to the International Space Station National Laboratory onboard SpaceX CRS-24.
Crystallography for the Misfit Crystals
Nicholas Sauter, a computer senior scientist in the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging (MBIB) Division, is co-leading a team working to provide a better way for scientists to study the structures of the many materials that don’t form tidy single crystals. Their new technique, called small-molecule serial femtosecond X-ray crystallography, or smSFX, supercharges traditional crystallography with the addition of custom-built image processing algorithms and an X-ray free electron laser (XFEL). In a paper published in Nature, the team demonstrated proof-of-principle for smSFX and reported the previously unknown structures of two metal-organic materials known as chacogenolates.
Congratulations to 2021 Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Investigators
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Investigator Program recently awarded $21 million to 21 University of California, Berkeley researchers. Of this group, four are faculty scientists in the Biosciences Area.
Comparative Functional Genomics Department Leadership Change
Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Division Director Susannah Tringe announced a change in leadership of the Comparative and Functional Genomics (CFG) Department, effective January 4, 2022. Diane Dickel is stepping down as the Department Head; Adam Deutschbauer has agreed to take on the role.
