Process Engineering & Analytics
The Process Engineering and Analytics Department is focused on bridging the gap between lab-scale research and the commercial deployment of efficient and cost-effective biomanufacturing processes for fuels, chemicals, proteins, oils, nucleic acids, and bio-based materials such as plastics and fibers. To achieve this connection, we model analytical measurements using a sound understanding of underlying metabolism and physiology, then integrate these models with the principles of chemical and environmental engineering. Applying this approach we can understand the key success factors and risks for each type of bioproduct in both a technical sense and from a process economics viewpoint, thereby enabling National Lab, academic, and industry partners and stakeholders to succeed.
