Two Bioscientists Selected for World Economic Forum Honor
Karen Davies, staff scientist in the Molecular Biophysics & Integrated Bioimaging Division, and Jenny Mortimer, Director of Plant Systems Biology at the Joint BioEnergy Institute, are two of 50 extraordinary scientists under the age of 40 who have been selected to participate alongside business and political leaders in the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions, which is taking place from June 26-28 in Tianjin, China.

Berkeley Lab Scientists Brew Jet Fuel in One-Pot Recipe

JBEI Hosts US-Australia City Exchange on Innovation Ecosystems
Delegates of the US-Australia City Exchange on Innovation Ecosystems, presented by the Future Cities Collaborative, an initiative of the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney visited JBEI on May 5. The delegates from New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia are visiting several cities in the United States to learn how to plan, finance, implement and support innovation districts in their cities. Their first stop was Emeryville. EmeryStation East, where JBEI is located, was presented as the hub of clean energy and a key space for research in in life, physical and nano sciences. Biosciences Area Participates at EERE’s National Lab Impact Summit
On May 4, 2016, EERE hosted a National Lab Impact Summit at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to celebrate recent National Laboratory successes and bring together the nation’s public- and private-sector energy leaders to formulate the next stage of clean energy technology innovation. The full-day program included keynote presentations, break-out panels by technology, discussions with industry-leading Chief Technology Officers, interactive exhibits, networking opportunities and tours.

Biosciences Co-Hosts STEM Career Awareness Day
Several Biosciences researchers and staff participated in the 2016 East Bay STEM Career Awareness Day on April 27 along with other neighboring East Bay-based businesses, organizations, and professionals. Together, they co-hosted nearly three hundred East Bay high school students from four school districts – Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, and Richmond – who took part in this one-day career exploration event at which they were introduced to careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
