The Berkeley Lab Director’s Office has announced the recipients of the 2015 Director’s Awards for Exceptional Achievement. Awardees included three women-researchers from the Biological Systems & Engineering Division: Eleanor Blakely, Sarah Richardson, and Corinne Scown.
Eleanor Blakely was recognized for her achievement in the new area of “Berkeley Lab Citation,” created this year, which recognizes the highest level of service to Berkeley Lab and the network of DOE labs. Blakely is a Biophysicist Guest Senior Scientist who joined the Lab in 1975 and whose work began with pioneering research into the use of ion beams for hadron therapy. Her work was featured in the article “A lifetime in biophysics” of CERN Courier last year.
Sarah Richardson was recognized for her achievement in the area of “Outreach” for promoting the Lab’s education mission or improving community relations. Richardson is a Computational Biologist Postdoctoral Fellow at the Joint BioEnergy Institute where she focuses on harnessing bacteria to make molecules that could lead to the development of new biofuels and medicines. She is a recipient of the 2015 For Women in Science Fellowship of L’Oréal USA and was recently among fourteen women honored “Women @ The Lab” for her involvement in outreach programs targeting minority and disadvantaged students. View her profile on the Women @ The Lab website here.
Corinne Scown was recognized for her achievement in the area of “Early Scientific Career” for significant scientific or technical contributions leading to important progress in an area of research or toward completion of a project. Scown is Director of Technoeconomic Analysis at the Joint BioEnergy Institute where she focuses on modeling the economic and environmental impacts of advanced pathways to bio-based fuels and products. She also holds a research scientist position in the Energy Technology Area at the Lab. Visit her website here.
A ceremony to recognize and celebrate all honorees takes place on Wednesday, December 2, at 2:30 p.m. in the Bldg 50 Auditorium. Go here to see the winners in each award category.
