For almost 30 years, the Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) has helped scientists decode and harness the blueprint of life. Now, as AI and advanced computing are changing what’s possible in biology, the JGI is entering a new chapter. The 2026 strategic plan, AI-Driven Genomics to Accelerate Biological Discovery, charts a new course for the future.  

Beyond building understanding, the JGI will lead the shift toward using data to predict how biological systems work. This will expedite design and optimization approaches for a wide range of biotechnology applications. 

To accomplish this, the JGI will pioneer AI-centric genomics, providing users both with data to train powerful models, as well as analysis tools to extract more meaning from their work. 

Reflecting on this shift, JGI Director Nigel Mouncey shared his perspective on where the institute is headed. 

“I’m tremendously excited about our new Strategic Plan which outlines a bold vision for JGI over the next 5-plus years, setting forth objectives that support our vision and alignment with DOE BER and the Genesis Mission,” he said. “This plan describes a strong roadmap for evolving the JGI of the future while staying true to our well-established user facility model. Our impact extends beyond the researchers who work with us through approved proposals, to the larger community that uses JGI-produced data to support their own scientific work. This plan paves the way for driving genomic innovation and advancing user science for all of them.”
