Each year, the Berkeley Lab Director’s Achievement Award program recognizes outstanding contributions by employees to all facets of Lab activities. Several Biosciences Area personnel are among the 2022 honorees.
Nikos Kyrpides, a senior scientist who heads the Microbiome Data Science group at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) and has a secondary affiliation in the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB) Division, was recognized for Scientific Achievement. His exceptional scientific contributions toward the understanding of environmental microbiomes were cited, as well as his creation of cutting-edge analysis tools and data resources that continue to be used by thousands of JGI users to advance DOE mission science.
The Advanced Light Source (ALS) Structural Biology Beamline Team was recognized in the Societal Impact category for bringing structural biology solutions to the world. The team was specifically cited for providing synchrotron data to guide vaccine and therapeutic development and to carry out basic virus biology science in response to SARS-CoV-2.
