Paul Adams, Director of the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division, has announced that Katy Christiansen will assume the role of Interim Area Deputy while he is serving as Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for the next year. Effective August 23, Christiansen will work with Adams to support the Area’s scientific mission and be responsible for helping to plan and execute the long-range strategy of the Biosciences Area.
Christiansen first joined Berkeley Lab in 2008 as a postdoctoral researcher at the Joint BioEnergy Institute, and returned to the Biosciences Area in 2014 to help lead strategic planning efforts after two years as a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the DOE Bioenergy Technologies Office. Christiansen has been the Head of the Strategic Programs Development Group for nearly a year and a half. She will continue to lead this group, which will be instrumental as she pursues long-range planning for Biosciences related to the Lab’s mission, execution of the Biosciences Strategic Plan, and handles other Area management responsibilities.
Over the past year, Katy spearheaded the formulation, production, and distribution of the Lab’s SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 10-Year Multidisciplinary Strategic Research Plan and she continues to lead a multi–national lab team, Designing the Bioeconomy for Decarbonization.
