Several Biosciences Area personnel are among the 2019 Berkeley Lab Director’s Awards honorees. This annual program recognizes outstanding contributions by employees to all facets of Lab activities. A complete list of winners can be found here. The Director’s Achievement Awards ceremony will take place on November 15 at 4 PM in the Building 50 Auditorium. All staff are invited and the event will be streamed live.
Sue Celniker, Biological Systems and Engineering (BSE) Division Deputy for Science, is one of two recipients of the 2019 Berkeley Lab Prize. This Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes her leadership and innovation in the areas of genetics and genomics, groundbreaking contributions in the characterization of RNAs, and more than 20 years of dedicated service to the Lab. Len Pennacchio, a senior scientist at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) with a secondary affiliation in Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB), will receive an award for Exceptional Scientific Achievement for his contributions toward our understanding of the functions of non-coding DNA in the human genome, and for providing cutting edge genomic technologies to thousands of JGI users to advance DOE-mission science.
Miaw-Sheue Tsai, a research scientist in BSE, will receive an award for Exceptional Achievement in Outreach for her care and dedication over nearly two decades to teach and train more than 90 high school students and undergraduates, many of whom have gone on to career success in biosciences and medicine.
Romy Chakraborty, Ecology Department Head in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area (EESA) with secondary appointment in EGSB, also will receive an award for Exceptional Achievement in Outreach for her extensive service as a mentor for programs that engage under-represented groups in science, and for her significant contribution to outreach that aims to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM fields.
