Corinne Scown, the Joint BioEnergy Institute’s (JBEI) Vice President for Life-Cycle, Economics and Agronomy and Director of Life-Cycle and Technoeconomic Analysis, has won the 2022 ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering Lectureship Award for the Americas. She was honored for “her contributions integrating emerging technology development with rigorous technoeconomic analysis and life-cycle assessment.”
Leah Freeman Sloan, Administrative Acrobat
In 2014, a friend passed along a link to an open administrator position with the Energy Technologies Area at Berkeley Lab. For Leah Freeman Sloan, working in a role that supports scientific research related to combating climate change seemed fulfilling on a personal level. And although she didn’t specialize in science, Sloan began to understand how her skills were essential to the program achieving its mission.
Two from Biosciences Area Named AAAS Fellows
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has announced that 564 of its members—among them four scientists at Berkeley Lab—have been elected Fellows as part of the 2021 class. The two newly named Fellows from the Biosciences Area are: Eva Nogales, a senior faculty scientist in the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging (MBIB) Division, and Scott Baker an affiliate with the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI).
Keasling Awarded Othmer Gold Medal
Jay Keasling, a senior faculty scientist in Biological Systems and Engineering, professor at UC Berkeley, and CEO of the Joint BioEnergy Institute, is the recipient of the Science History Institute’s 2022 Othmer Gold Medal. The award recognizes his efforts in developing innovative synthetic biology tools that address major societal challenges such as biofuel manufacturing and medical applications.
Report from Second Plant Single-cell Solutions for Energy and the Environment Workshop Available
On April 29, 2021, Berkeley Lab hosted a second workshop to identify the most pressing barriers to wider adoption of single-cell sequencing and omics technologies, and to discuss solutions to remedy those barriers in order to drive discovery. The workshop report is now available for download.
