The mission of the Biosciences Area includes solving national challenges in energy, environment, health, and manufacturing. In support of this mission we encourage industry engagement and the disclosure of inventions and software to the Lab’s Intellectual Property Office (IPO). Biosciences and IPO provide Area-specific support to help staff navigate these processes.
A total of twenty-nine start-up companies have been based on Biosciences Area inventions, which is over 40% of all of the start-up companies to come out of Berkeley Lab. Most of those companies were started by Biosciences researchers.
We’d like to do even more to bridge the gap between scientific invention and commercial application and impact. Maintaining this culture of innovation involves several activities that require researcher participation.
