At a recent gathering of principal investigators in the nascent Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology (EGSB) Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), Interim Division Director Trent Northen announced a major initiative central to EGSB called EcoFAB. In preparation for the official launch of the new EGSB Division on October 1st, researchers attended a recent scientific retreat at the UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens. During this meeting, Northen introduced EcoFAB, which was inspired by plans for a new BioEPIC building at Berkeley Lab that would be the future home of scientists and engineers in EGSB and portions of the Earth & Environmental Sciences Area. By bringing together researchers across both Areas, BioEPIC will provide the first integrated and streamlined capabilities to enable discovery, quantification, and prediction of how the environment regulates biology and how biology shapes the environment.
