Research Interests
My research program adapts and applies theory and ideas from ecology to microbiology to improve understanding of Earth’s microbial systems. It specifically aims to adapt macroecology, biogeography, and community ecology to microbial systems to (i) understand how ecological mechanisms shape microbial ecosystems and (ii) forecast the behavior of these systems at microscopic to global scales to address environmental problems, and improve public health and agriculture. To achieve these aims, I use a combination of novel computational and mathematical approaches, in conjunction with massive sequence data sets and environmental data. The overarching aim of my research is to leverage a complex systems approach for developing a hypothesis-driven science of microbial biogeography and macroecology.
